NaturalVision Remastered - Install Guide

Introduction

NaturalVision Remastered (NVR) is a "work-in-progress" visual overhaul mod. Numerous changes were made to the environmental weathers, lighting system, ambient colors, tonemapping, weapons system, select textures and much more in order to blur the line between fantasy and reality.

The goal was to try and make GTAV look visually similar to Southern California in real life. In order to achieve this, research on the Los Angeles (Los Santos) and Salton Sea (Sandy Shores) regions was conducted using hundreds of photos and hours upon hours of video footage. All of this was necessary in order to produce the most realistic visual experience currently possible with GTAV's limited game engine.

Fun Fact: More than 4000 hours have been spent working on this mod. These things take time.

The aesthetic behind NaturalVision Remastered was inspired by Forza Horizon, Watch_Dogs, GTAIV and a variety of other games.
Numerous visual details were taken from those titles and remade in GTAV's various weathers.

Unlike most graphics mods, NaturalVision Remastered does not rely on ReShade for its looks. This allows for players to enjoy a massive boost in performance.

There are numerous optional add-ons included with this mod, ranging from a depth of field modifier, motion blur enhancer, LSPDFR related tweaks and much more. This gives users the ability to customize the game to their liking.

It also includes an optional ENB and ReShade package which produces effects such as improved vehicle anti-aliasing, sharpening, deband and more.

Please make sure to check everything out so that you can enjoy this mod as much as possible.

Requirements and General Info

Recommended Specs

With NaturalVision Remastered, your in-game performance will be about the same as vanilla.

The only thing that matters is how you currently run GTAV without mods and the FPS you receive on average.

If you plan on using ReShade then you may experience performance loss, but it's not necessary to use it anymore.

There is little to no performance loss with ENB by itself, so feel free to use that.

What You Need

OpenIV - DOWNLOAD
VisualV (Optional) - DOWNLOAD

Getting Ready

Before we begin, make sure your game folder is clean.
If you are using a previous version of NaturalVision then please uninstall it.

Uninstall Tips

To remove an older graphics mod, please refer to the "NaturalVision Uninstaller" add-on within the "Optional Add-Ons" folder.
To uninstall MVGA, please download the "MVGA Uninstaller" .OIV file by clicking here.
To uninstall GTA5 Redux, please download the "Redux Uninstaller" .OIV file by clicking here.

You can uninstall old ReShade/ENB configs by deleting these files and folders:

- d3d11.dll
- dxgi.dll
- ReShade.dll
- ReShade64.dll
- /ReShade/
- /reshade-shaders/
- ReShade.fx

Now that we've taken care of everything, let's get to the installation process!

Updating

Are you a returning NVR user looking to update? Read this.

In order to update your game to the newest version of this mod, first run the "NaturalVision Installer" .OIV file.
Next, copy everything from inside the folder labeled "Main Files" and paste it into your GTAV game folder.

Next, go through the "Optional Add-Ons" folder and install anything that you need.

Now you're ready to play.

If you are not a returning user, then please follow all of the install instructions listed below.

Install Instructions

Step 1:

Extract the NaturalVision Remastered archive to your desktop. Don't touch anything yet, we'll come back to this later.

Step 2:

Download OpenIV and set it up

Run OpenIV.exe

Click "Tools > ASI Manager" and then install the ASI Loader Plugin

Next install the OpenIV.asi Plugin

OpenIV will ask if you want to make a 'mods' folder - Click YES

Exit OpenIV

Tip: Don't use Discord, Teamspeak, Ventrilo etc.. when installing an .OIV file or OpenIV may crash.

Step 3 (Optional):

Download VisualV (Latest Version) and install it to the mods folder.

Extract VisualV (Latest Version) to your desktop

Browse to the VisualV folder named "installation via modPackage" and open VisualV.oiv using OpenIV

If it does not open, then right click the .oiv file and change the 'Opens with:' to use OpenIV as shown in the image below

Tip: The .exe path for OpenIV is located at "C:\Users\PC\AppData\Local\New Technology Studio\Apps\OpenIV"

When you're done, the latest version of VisualV should be installed into a folder named "mods" inside of your Grand Theft Auto V game directory

If you want to install some of the VisualV optional files then do it now before proceeding to the next step

Important Tip #1: Do not install the "Earths Atmosphere" mod from the VisualV "optionals" folder.
It creates problems with the overall clouds and colors when used in combination with NaturalVision Remastered.

Important Tip #2: Do not install the "Advanced Blur" mod from the VisualV "optionals" folder.
It will crash the game when used in combination with NaturalVision Remastered.
Instead, please install the "Enhanced Motion Blur" mod from the NVR optional add-ons folder.

Step 4:

Go back to the NaturalVision Remastered folder.

Run "NaturalVision Installer.oiv" by using OpenIV and install it to the mods folder.

You can alternatively do a manual install if that's what you're more comfortable with.

Make sure you do not have any missing files during the install process.

Move on to the next step once you're done.

Before starting your game, please read below for additional information.

Content Creator Tips

If you plan on streaming or making a cool YouTube video with NVR, then I recommend you use the ENB add-on for enhanced
vehicle reflections and improved street lamp lighting at night time.

Do not use your own custom ReShade preset if you're making a comparison video.
Use the ReShade that comes with NVR or don't use any ReShade at all.

I also recommend using Simple Trainer to change the weathers instead of using a different trainer.
Otherwise, the clouds will not properly spawn.

When you change the weather too fast, it can mess with natural cloud transitions. You must wait for new clouds to spawn.
To speed things up, you must select the same weather two or three times in the trainer until it starts to form clouds.

Please take a moment to explore the various times and weathers. Use the "real-time duration" option from Simple Trainer.
I guarantee you will discover something beautiful each time you play.

Lastly, I would appreciate if you can put a download link to the mod in the video description and/or credit my YouTube channel.

Display Brightness Tips

It is very important for you to set the correct brightness level. Otherwise you won't see certain details properly.

Try to keep your GTAV display brightness at 50% for the best possible experience.

You can copy my settings below. Keep in mind they're based on my own monitor's brightness settings.

To get the best possible results, I suggest reading this guide and calibrating your monitor's display settings.

Alternatively, you can take all the tests on the top of this page and calibrate your monitor as you go along.

The Rockstar logo MUST be visible.
Try to match the colors, contrast and gamma of your game with the picture below. No ReShade!

Weather: ExtraSunny
Time: 19:00 (Exact)
Location: Del Perro Pier

If the colors, contrast and gamma do not match, then please adjust your display settings.

Timecycle Script

The "timecyclemods.asi" script that you installed in Step 5 is part of the main files and will improve the lighting and tonemapping in select weathers.

There is no performance loss with this script.
Take a look at the comparison below in Overcast weather.

Developer Notes
Keys: You can edit the Reload and Toggle keys. If you set them like this... ToggleKey=0x33 ReloadKey=0x34 Then pressing 3 on your keyboard will toggle it off and pressing 4 on your keyboard will toggle it on / reload the script Editing the config file: Changing Enable=0 to Enable=1 will (obviously) enable the modifier for that weather. Strength for 1.0 means 100% intensity Transition Time This variable slowly changes the tonemapping between each weather over a period of time in order to create a smooth transition. Setting it to 0.01 will instantly transition the modifier from weather to weather, while increasing the value will transition over a longer period of time. Usage You must ask for permission before uploading this script with your own mod. Depending on several things, you may or may not be granted permission. Custom Modifiers You can create your own modifier with tonemap settings inside of a timecycle_mods_*.xml file. Example: The best way to create the perfect setting is by downloading the Timecycle Reloader and editing the tonemap settings in your visualsettings.dat file. Once you are done editing for a specific weather, open up a timecycle_mods_*.xml file and create a custom modifier using the above example. Lastly you just replace the "postfx_tonemap_filmic" values with the values from your visualsettings.dat file. Global Modifiers The global modifier is supposed to be your default tonemapping in visualsettings after porting it over to timecyclemods_*.xml under the name of Global or something else. I recommend creating a global modifier and setting it for each weather in which you don't plan on modifying the lighting. ____________________________________________________________________________ You can ignore the "[TIMECYCLE]" part inside the config file. It's set to Enable=0 and isn't important. If you have any questions then please leave a comment on the mod page.

Optional Add-Ons

There are several add-ons within the NaturalVision Remastered folder.
Here is a brief overview of what each add-on does.

ENB Only
The ENB config in NaturalVision Remastered improves vehicle reflections, fixes a bug with car deformation damage and reduces street light intensity during the night.

Currently there is no way of changing the street light intensity through the timecycle or visualsettings, so ENB must be used to achieve this.

There are two versions of ENB included in this package. The "Normal Preset" version will not have an impact on performance, but is missing Skylighting and SSAO/SSIL effects which are otherwise included in the "Ultra Preset" version.

To use ENB on its own, copy and paste all the files and folders from the "ENB Only" directory to your main GTAV game directory.
ENB requires the DLL files below in order to work properly. Make sure you download them.

Required ENB DLL Files
Normal Preset - DOWNLOAD LINK
Ultra Preset - DOWNLOAD LINK

Place these files inside your main GTAV directory.
Overwrite any old file(s) containing the same name.

You can open the ENB menu by pressing "Left Shift + Enter" at the same time while in-game.

You can take screenshots with ENB by using the "Print Screen" button. They will save in your GTAV game folder.
For more information on ENB, please visit this link.

ReShade and ENB
The ReShade preset applies subtle effects such as Sharpening, SMAA, Deband etc..

There are two versions of ReShade / ENB included in this package. The "Normal Preset" version will not have an impact on performance, but is missing Skylighting and SSAO/SSIL effects which are otherwise included in the "Ultra Preset" version.

To use both ReShade and ENB together, copy and paste all the files and folders from the "ReShade and ENB" directory to your main GTAV game directory.

ReShade and ENB require the DLL files below in order to work properly. Make sure you download them.

Required ReShade and ENB DLL Files
Normal Preset - DOWNLOAD LINK
Ultra Preset - DOWNLOAD LINK

Place these files inside your main GTAV directory.
Overwrite any old file(s) containing the same name.
You can open the ReShade 3.0 menu by pressing the "Scroll Lock" button while in-game.

Once the ReShade 3.0 menu is open, you will be able to select the "NaturalVision.ini" ReShade preset from the dropdown menu.

You can take screenshots with ReShade by using the "Print Screen" button. They will save in your GTAV game folder.
For more information on ReShade 3.0, please visit this link.

Enhanced Motion Blur
This add-on will improve the motion blur quality when driving a vehicle or running around on-foot.

Only works in third-person mode.

Fully compatible with the timecycle lighting script. Looks similar to the "advancedblur" script that VisualV provides.

First-Person Depth of Field
This add-on will enable a cinematic depth of field effect when you switch the camera to first-person mode.

Lightning strikes will become blurred in first-person when using this add-on.

Comes with two different versions: FAR and NEAR

FAR will place the depth of field effect away from the player and into the distance.
NEAR will place the depth of field effect closer to the player.

First-Person Lens Flare
This add-on will enable the lens flare effect while in first-person camera mode.

Disable Third-Person Lens Flare
This add-on will remove the lens flare effect while in third-person camera mode.

Alternate Lens Flare Style
This add-on will change the lens flare effect to a different style that was inspired by modern racing games.

Different Rain Puddles
This add-on will increase or decrease the amount of puddles that spawn during Rainy and Thunder weather.

You can pick from up to three different options of your choice.

Brighter Emergency Lights (LSPDFR)
This add-on will increase the intensity of all emergency lights for LSPDFR players.

It will also decrease the excessive glow on taxi adverts and bus/metro LED signs for a more enjoyable experience.

By installing this add-on, you may or may not experience brighter dashboard lighting on certain vehicles.

Precise Thunder Bolts
This add-on will modify the thunder bolt so it looks best on your screen.

The thunder bolt in GTAV will look different depending on your in-game resolution.

To get the most out of NVR, you should install the thunder bolt that best suits your resolution.

You can choose between 720p, 1080p, 1440p, 4k or 5k resolution.

Please remember to install the correct file. It must match your in-game resolution.

Hide Weapon Reticle and Damage Overlay
This add-on will remove the weapon reticle and damage indicator overlay from the in-game HUD menu.

It will not remove the Sniper or Homing Launcher reticles. Works in third-person and first-person mode.

Corona Modifier
This add-on comes with two different settings that let you take control of the corona / flare.

The first one is called "Remove Vehicle Coronas" and it removes every single vehicle corona but does not remove the corona from lamps and other light objects.

The second one is called "Remove ALL Coronas" and it will remove every single corona within the game.

Trash Modifier
This add-on comes with three different settings that let you modify the amount of trash on streets and sidewalks.

You can either use the default trash settings, increase the amount of trash or remove all trash from spawning.

Brighter Nights
This add-on will make it easier for you to see at night by making the sky and environment brighter.

It is only recommended for users who do not have their monitor properly calibrated.

Disable Wet Roads Effect
This add-on will prevent the roads from appearing wet during sunny weathers.

It will also remove wet sound effects.

This add-on is not recommended unless you have an issue with sound or animations.

Mercedes-Benz 300 SL
This add-on will install the exclusive Mercedes-Benz 300 SL created by vans123 for Razed.

FiveM NVR Pack
This add-on will let you use NVR on FiveM without any hassle.

First, open the "Main Package" folder and copy the "addons" folder from inside.

Next, go to your "FiveM Application Data" folder.

Paste the "addons" folder you copied from earlier. Replace all files.

Done! Now you can play FiveM with the NVR mod.

Note: If you want to install something from the "Optional Add-Ons" folder then just copy and paste the .rpf file(s) to the "addons" folder within the "FiveM Application Data" folder.
You can install any .ASI script into the "plugins" folder inside the "FiveM Application Data" folder.
Unfortunately, FiveM has a few issues with NVR, so let's go over them.
1. Only some of the NVR carcols modifications work with FiveM.

2. None of the NVR vegetation / world textures work with FiveM.

3. None of the NVR vehicle emissive textures work with FiveM.

4. The 'timecyclemods.asi' script does not work with FiveM. Additionally, ReShade and ENB do not work together. You can only use one or the other.

5. Some of the interiors are too bright at night time. This is a result of me specifically tweaking the visualsettings.dat tonemapping to be different in FiveM, in order to compensate for the 'timecyclemods.asi' script not working.
Keep in mind that NVR was created for the Los Santos and Blaine County areas.

Please ignore any issues you notice on a custom FiveM map.

NaturalVision Uninstaller
This add-on will let you uninstall the NVR mod.

Trainer Tips

In order to have the best possible experience, I recommend downloading Simple Trainer.

Do not use any other trainer to change weathers with this mod.

Otherwise the clouds may not spawn and you will not get the full experience.

I recommend using the "real-time duration" option from Simple Trainer in order to make sure
you don't miss any of the cool sunrise and sunsets.

Note: ScriptHookV and ScriptHookVDotNet are required for trainers to work!

I don't recommend using the "Clouds Menu" in any trainer that will force clouds.

All of the weathers in NVR were designed to use a specific style of clouds.

Forcing a different set of clouds can cause visual bugs and break the natural cloud formation.

Enabling Volumetric Street Lights

Warning: This effect may cause a slight performance drop!
In some of the weathers, the night time street lamps include a volumetric lighting effect that enhances the overall atmosphere.

To enable these lights in your game, first browse to the GTAV 'Documents' folder on your computer

Default path:
C:\Users\PC\Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V

Next, open up 'settings.xml' with Notepad

Look for the line that says "Lighting_FogVolumes value="false" />"

Change it from "false" to "true" and save the file

Next time you start up GTAV, the volumetric lighting effect will be enabled

Adjusting Corona / Flare Size

For advanced users!

Light corona's look different depending on your in-game resolution.

The default NVR corona size is adjusted to suit 1080p and 1440p resolutions.

If you want to adjust the corona size and make it scale perfectly with a higher resolution, then read below.
Using OpenIV, browse to "mods/update/update.rpf/common/data/" and extract "visualsettings.dat" to your desktop

Using Notepad++ or another text editor, open the visualsettings.dat file and scroll down to line 835

If your in-game resolution is 4k, then change "misc.coronas.sizeScaleGlobal" from '1.20' to '1.46'

If your in-game resolution is 5k, then change "misc.coronas.sizeScaleGlobal" from '1.20' to '1.66'

Save the file and drag it back into "mods/update/update.rpf/common/data/"

The changes will take effect next time you start your game

Mod Compatibility

NVR works fine with most mods and trainers out there.

If you have any questions regarding mod compatibility, please leave a comment on the GTA5-Mods.com page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Why is it called "NaturalVision Remastered" instead of NV 3.0?

Answer: It's a complete overhaul and remaster of the original mod, so there was no point in continuing with version names.
This time there is a full timecycle and tons of other visual files included with precise tweaks. It also doesn't rely on ReShade for its visuals anymore, which will provide a big performance boost. Try it out and see for yourself.
Question: I'm getting a lot of screen flickering in my game after installing your mod. Can you help?

Answer: Open up the ReShade 3.0 menu in-game with the 'Scroll Lock' key and select the 'NaturalVision' preset. This will fix the flickering issue.
Question: My game keeps crashing on startup. What did I do wrong?

Answer: This is one of the most commonly asked questions and the answer always depends.

Reasons why your game can crash:

- You are using a pirated game copy.

- You did not install the files into your "mods" folder and instead put them in the game folder. Big mistake.

- You downloaded a GTAV script mod that is broken.

- You are using recording software such as Fraps, MSI Afterburner etc. with the ReShade add-on. They're not compatible together.

- You are running Teamviewer in the background which can cause a crash in fullscreen mode.

- You installed a custom vehicle mod and it was either buggy or you messed up the install.

- You forgot to install the ReShade and/or ENB .DLL Files

- You forgot to delete old ENB/ReShade/SweetFX .DLL files.
Question: I'm getting weird lines in the sky during certain times. How do I fix this?

Answer: You may experience this if you are an AMD user and your graphics card overheats.
Despite this being a hardware problem, you may be able to fix it by going into your GTAV settings and turning MSAA off and back on.
Question: Some of the vehicles have weird textures and colors after installing your mod. Can you help me fix this?

Answer: This issue will only occur if you are using replacement vehicles as opposed to add-on dlc vehicles.

NVR includes tons of modified vanilla vehicle textures.

These textures are installed into a folder / archive at "mods/update/x64/dlcpacks/NVR_emissive/dlc.rpf/x64/textures.rpf"

You can try going into the 'textures.rpf' archive and deleting any .ytd textures that correspond with your vehicle name.

For example: If I replaced Michael's Tailgater with a modded car and experience vehicle texture issues, then I will go into 'textures.rpf' and delete the 'tailgater.ytd' file.
Question: My game looks kinda ugly. How do I make it look like your screenshots?

Answer: If you don't have the same visual quality as me, it's probably because you are not downsampling your game from a 4k or 5k resolution.
This removes a lot of the aliasing (jagged edges) from the game, leaving a sharp and clean picture.
I only recommend using NVIDIA DSR on a high-end computer or for taking screenshots.
Question: Why does the Moon position look weird during 21:00 to 22:00?

Answer: I modified the Sun and Moon position during this hour in order to achieve a better looking sunset.
Question: Why does some of the vegetation have weird lighting during (6:00 to 6:30) and (20:00 to 20:30) in Sunny weathers?

Answer: That is a result of the atmosphere I've created during those hours. I cannot fix this without ruining all the good lighting.
Question: How do I make two copies of GTAV to play with mods and also play GTA Online?

Answer: You need two separate folders. You can name one folder "Grand Theft Auto Online" while your modded folder is called "Grand Theft Auto V".

When you want to play online, name the modded folder "Grand Theft Auto V Modded" and rename the GTA:O folder to "Grand Theft Auto V".

You basically just switch back and forth with the folder names.

Both Steam and Social Club will try to detect a folder named "Grand Theft Auto V" when you launch your game, so it makes sense to rename your folders every now and then depending on what you feel like playing.
Question: Does this mod work with GTA Online?

Answer: Nope, it's strictly for Single Player because Rockstar don't allow timecycle mods to work in online.
Question: Can I use your timecycle and other files as a base for my own mod? What about adapting some of your timecycle values into my mod?

Answer: No, you do not have my permission to do this. Unless you're _CP_, robi29 or another friend of mine.
Then you can use some of my work but please ask first.
Question: Is this mod compatible with another graphics mod?

Answer: NVR is not meant to be used with any other graphics mod with the exception of VisualV.
Do not mix any of the timecycle / visual files with another mod.
Question: I don't like the newest update of NaturalVision for some reason. Where can I download the old versions?

Answer: You don't like the new update? Are you mental? Well, here are all the old versions...

NaturalVision 1.0 - https://goo.gl/Ruq81w
NaturalVision 1.1 - https://goo.gl/WqkKya
NaturalVision 1.2 - https://goo.gl/PZ6d9g

NaturalVision Remastered (October 10th, 2017) - https://goo.gl/wuaWDu
NaturalVision Remastered (March 20th, 2018) - https://goo.gl/mza8Go
Question: Does Vanilla GTAV look better than the NaturalVision mod?

Answer: Depends on who you ask. Everyone has different tastes.

I prefer the realistic skies, sunsets, haze, ambient colors and lighting etc. in NVR over Vanilla graphics.

Don't get me wrong though. I think Vanilla GTAV's visuals look gorgeous. Rockstar did a terrific job.

At the end of the day, it's up to the visual artist or team that gets to decide what kind of art style the game needs.

Thanks to the power of modding, I was able to make GTAV look the way I personally wanted.
Question: I read through this FAQ and still can't figure out my issue. Please help me.

Answer: In that case, you can contact me for help on the GTA5-Mods.com comments page.
Please attach a screenshot with your comment that shows me all of the files in your game directory.
This way I can try to figure out if you're missing anything important.
